For residents of San Francisco-Bay Area we offer following lectures and/or master-classes:

    Traditional Man's Costume of the 17-19 centuries in Russia,

    Cut a Russian man's shirt of an authentic design.

    and/or a master-class (several options are avaliable):

    Cut a Russian shirt/dress of an authentic design for your son or daughter.

    Make Russian talismans or traditional decoration for your clothes or your house

The cost of a lecture/master-class is $25 per person.

Feel free to ask us to organize any lecture/master-class for a group of your friends who are interested in Russian tradition. Please contact us via e-mail, and we will discuss date, time, and place appropriate for you group.

If you don't have a group, you may sign in for any lecture. We will make a lecture on a certain topic when a group of at least 4 people will be assembled. We will inform you about date, time, and place of a lecture.


1. Traditional Man's Costume of the 17-19 centuries in Russia

A Lecture (appr. 1 hr 30 mins)
  • A brief overview of a traditional Russian men's costume of the XVII-XIX centuries
  • What items did the men's costume consist of? Materials, designs, and history of each part.
  • A costume of different age groups : a toddler, a boy, a teenager, a young adult, a married young man, a family head, a senior. Description, character, materials of each costume. Social meaning and spiritual explanation of colors, materials and decoration used in costumes of different age groups.
  • A man's shirt. Evolution of its model and decoration. Regional specifics of design and decoration. Specific details mark wealth and nobility of a wearer.
A Master-class (appr. 2 hrs)
  • Choose the model of a shirt appropriate to a participant (according to his age, wealth and family history).
  • Take measures needed for the shirt.
  • Make a sketch of the shirt of that measures.

2. Traditional Woman's Costume of the 13-19 centuries in Russia.

A Lecture (appr. 1hr 30 mins)
  • A brief overview of a traditional Russian women's costume of the XIII-XIX centuries.
  • What items did the women's costume consist of? Materials, designs, and history of each part.
  • Four main types of Russian women's clothes. History, evolution, regional specifics, specifics of a cut.
  • A woman's shirt or a ritual dress. Regional specifics. Spiritual meaning of a decoration.
  • A sarafan: what is this? Regional specifics. Social meaning of a decoration.
  • A Poneva-Skirt: what is this? Regional specifics. Social meaning of a decoration.

  • How to make a woman's shirt
    • Choose the model of a shirt or a dress appropriate to a participant (according to her age, and family history).

3. Traditional Children's (babies', toddlers', kids', teens') and Young Adults' Clothes of the 17-19 centuries in Russia

  • 0-8 years old: a baby, a toddler, a kid. Description of a costume. Reasoining of specific details: practical, social, spiritual.
  • 7/8 - 14/15 years old: pre-teen and early teenager. Description of a costume. Reasoining of specific details: practical, social, spiritual.
  • 14/15 years old - till a marriage (or, till 25 years old): a groom-to-be/a bride-to-be. Description of a costume. Reasoining of specific details: practical, social, spiritual.
A Master-class (appr. 2 hrs)
  • Choose the model of a shirt or a dress appropriate to your child (according to age, wealth and family history).
  • Take measures needed.
  • Make a sketch of the shirt/dress of that measures.

4. Traditional Russian Embroidery (XI-XIX centuries).

A Lecture (appr. 1 hr 30 mins)
  • The origin of the embroidery (Bibikova's theory).
  • The symbolic language of the ancient embroidery: the meaning of main pictographs (10 of them). History and evolution of pictographs. Color symbolism of the embroidery.
  • Degradation of the ancient embroidery in the XIX century: reasons and ways.
A Master-class (appr. 2 hrs)
  • Introducing of different techniques and stitches of Russian embroidery: nabor, "painting"-stitch, counted stitch, tambour, cross stitch.
  • The technique : how to make each of them.
  • Choose a design for a project.
  • Start the project.
